Why this exists.

The rules the book follows

• Plain English first, legal term second. Every concept is explained before it is named.
• Six gates, kept separate. Eligibility, novelty, inventive step, utility, enablement and claim value are never blended into one verdict.
• Jurisdictions kept separate. A United States grace period is never applied to Europe. A Canadian filing date is never confused with a priority date.
• Verified, dated law. Every statute, office notice and deadline was checked against primary sources on 6 September 2026, and each chapter says what to recheck.
• No scores, no promises. The book never rates patentability. Its output is a package for counsel and a decision.
• Fictional examples only. Six invented founders carry the same problems through the book. No real client, invention or case outcome is used.

The author

Kenneth M.F. McGrath is the founder of CIONAOD Inc., a federally incorporated Canadian multimedia publisher based in Ottawa, Ontario. A former public-school educator, he works across publishing, standards development, instructional design and web application development, and writes for people who have to make expensive decisions with incomplete information.
